Thanks to my participation on an internet message board for greyhound fans, I've met some really cool folks (some in real life, but mostly online).
One of them breeds racing greyhounds. Last year, she started trying to pre-adopt her pups. She posted the information about the litters, with pics of newborn puppies to the message boards, and folks were falling all over themselves to get in line to pre-adopt a racing puppy.
Pre-adopters get to follow their dog's life and career, and they get first option on adopting the dog when he/she is no longer racing.
I'm now a pre-adopter for a little black-faced brindle boy who was born
on 12/26/04. His racing name will be FTH ____Talker. All the pups
from this litter (5 brindle boys) are named FTH (something)Talker.
I'm not sure which racing name goes to puppy #5, who is now *my*
puppy.
This is a really cool concept - Cathie gets the hassle (and the joy) of
their puppyhood, the pup gets to go to school and learn how to be a
winner, then prove himself on the track with a wonderful career, and
when he's done racing (and done as a stud, if he's really good), he's
already got a couch to come home to, with a new mama who's known him
since he was a tiny little baby boy.
Cathie has created a website - Follow That Hound - where folks can go to see more puppy pics, or read her blog about the puppies, or even to find out more about pre-adopting a dog of their own.
Here's a link to a pic of my little guy - I'm calling him Pippin, but I've no idea what Cathie is gonna call him. LOL
Update: More pics!

Update, Part Deux:
Cathie's gonna see how her husband feels about Pippin as a call name - he's a big LOTR fan, so it might work. :) AND... my little buddy's official racing name is going to be "FTH Sweet Talker." The FTH is for "Follow That Hound," and denotes a dog from one of Cathie's pre-adopted litters. They're working to reserve that prefix for their kennel, in fact. One of the other GreyTalkers came up with a list of name suggestions - FTH Smooth Talker, Big Talker, Grey Talker, etc., and they liked the concept, so my little guy gets to be Sweet Talker. He sure looks like a little sweetie.
