Dear Mom...
You remember Karen, my friend from college? The one who lived just down the road from us, but I never met her until we were both 300 miles away from home? I just found out that she died, back in 1996. That's all I know, right now.
I immediately hit the internet, and Googled for her name. There was only one hit, and while it was about her, it didn't tell me anything. Since those folks knew her, though, I shot them an email asking if they could share any details. We'll see if they respond.
I was stunned, Mom. And as ever, my brain said "call Mom, and talk to her." So here I am. I just cannot believe that she's dead.
Yeah, we'd lost touch with each other, but she's been dead for almost 10 years, and I had no idea. Nor did her college roommate.
And now, memories are just running through my head, pictures of her, of all of us, having fun together.
I hope those folks write me back. I'd love to know what happened.
Update:
They wrote back. It seems that it was her anniversary, and she was in a hurry to get home to join her husband for dinner, so she passed a car. When she did, she hit a truck.
*sigh*
I know how you feel. I googled one day to see if I could find a MSgt I knew back in 75-76. Turns out he died in 2001. Wish I'd stayed in touch with him, to let him know one of his problem children get straightened out...
